Graduation season is always a special time of year. It’s filled with celebrations, proud families, and young people stepping into the next chapter of their lives. To all the graduates out there—congratulations! Your hard work, determination, and perseverance have brought you to this milestone. And to the parents, guardians, and families who supported them every step of the way—this achievement belongs to you, too.

But if I’m being honest, when I graduated from high school, I had very little idea what I wanted to do with my life.

Feeling Clueless Isn’t a Failure—It’s the Beginning

Like many graduates, I felt excited—but also uncertain. I didn’t have everything mapped out, and I certainly didn’t know exactly where my career path would lead. What I did have, though, was opportunity—and people who were willing to guide me.

During my internships and early jobs at WBGU-TV, I was surrounded by professionals who took the time to invest in me. They noticed things about me that I didn’t yet see in myself. They identified my strengths, encouraged my curiosity, and helped steer me in directions that made sense for my abilities and passions.

Those mentors didn’t just teach me technical skills. They helped shape my confidence, my work ethic, and my understanding of what it means to be part of a team. Looking back now, I can clearly see how those experiences formed the foundation of who I am today.

The Responsibility We All Share

That’s why graduation season is more than just a celebration—it’s also a reminder of the responsibility we all share to nurture the next generation.

Mentorship doesn’t only happen in offices or internships. It happens everywhere:

  • On the field of play, where coaches teach teamwork and resilience
  • In classrooms, where teachers spark curiosity and build confidence
  • In workplaces, where supervisors and coworkers model professionalism and integrity
  • In communities, where adults take time to encourage young people and believe in their potential

This is also why May is such a meaningful month, as we recognize Teacher Appreciation Week. Teachers play an incredible role in shaping young minds, often going far beyond lesson plans to provide encouragement, structure, and support. Their impact lasts a lifetime, and they deserve our gratitude.

Paying It Forward

Today, I’m grateful to have the chance to pay that mentorship forward.

Here at Momentum Advertising, we recently welcomed a new team member, Alivia. Watching her learn, grow, and pick up on the skills we share with her has been incredibly rewarding. We hope to be the same kind of mentors to her that others were to us—people who listen, guide, and help open doors to future dreams and aspirations.

Because sometimes, all it takes is one person to notice your strengths and say, “You’re good at this—keep going.”

A Final Congratulations

So as we celebrate graduates this season, let’s also celebrate the parents, teachers, coaches, mentors, and community members who helped them get here. And let’s commit to continuing that cycle of encouragement and guidance for the young people around us.

To the Class of this year: You don’t have to have everything figured out right now. Stay curious. Listen to the people who want to help you succeed. Be willing to learn. Your path will take shape, one step at a time.

And to everyone who plays a role in mentoring others—thank you. You truly help make the world a better place.
