There’s something about January that makes us want to start fresh.

New year. New goals. New plans. New budgets.

For businesses, that often means taking a fresh look at marketing. Maybe this will finally be the year you update your website. Maybe you’ll start posting consistently on social media. Maybe you’ll add more video. Maybe you’ll finally make time to share the knowledge and experience that sets your business apart.

Those are great goals.

But why wait until January?

September gives businesses something January doesn’t: time.

There are still several months left in 2026, which means you have an opportunity to start making improvements now, see how they work, and head into the new year with some momentum already behind you.

Start With What Your Customers See

Before you start thinking about a completely new marketing plan, take a look at your business from a customer’s perspective.

Search for your business online.

Visit your website from your phone.

Scroll through your recent social media posts.

Look at the photos and videos you’re using.

Does what you see accurately represent the business you are today?

Businesses change. You add services, hire new people, complete new projects, update products and find better ways to serve your customers. But sometimes your marketing gets left behind.

Your website may still feature information that was written years ago. Your social media page may go weeks without an update. Your photos may no longer show the quality of work you’re doing today.

You don’t necessarily need to start over.

You may just need to start catching up.

Your Website Should Be Working for You

Your website is often one of the first places someone goes when they want to learn more about your business.

What happens when they get there?

Can they quickly understand what you do? Is the information current? Does the website work well on a phone? Can visitors easily figure out how to contact you or take the next step?

A website shouldn’t simply exist because every business is supposed to have one. It should be a useful part of your marketing.

That doesn’t always mean building a completely new website. Sometimes updating photos, improving the wording, reorganizing information or creating a clearer path for customers can make a noticeable difference.

And if your current website truly has fallen behind your business, starting the process now means you don’t have to spend January figuring out where to begin.

Consistency on Social Media Matters More Than a January Resolution

And We’ve all seen what happens with New Year’s resolutions.

Everyone starts strong.

Then life gets busy.

Businessess can fall into the same pattern with social media. You decide you’re going to post more often, share more photos and keep customers updated. A few weeks later, there are customers to serve, employees to manage, estimates to finish and a hundred other things demanding your attention.

Social media gets pushed down the list.

That’s why consistency needs to be a plan, not a resolution.

You don’t have to post every day. You don’t have to participate in every trend. And you certainly don’t have to be on every platform.

What matters is consistently giving your audience reasons to remember your business.

Show a recent project. Answer a common customer question. Introduce an employee. Share a useful tip. Explain one of your services. Celebrate something happening in your community.

Start building that habit now, and by January you’ll already have several months of consistent content behind you.

Give People Something Worth Watching

Think about how quickly you scroll through your own social media feed.

Your customers are doing the same thing.

Video gives businesses an opportunity to slow that scroll down and show people something they might not understand from a paragraph of text or a single photo.

Show how something is made.

Walk customers through a project.

Answer a question you hear all the time.

Take people behind the scenes.

Introduce the people who make your business what it is.

A good video doesn’t always need to feel like a commerical. In many cases, simply showing your people, your expertise and what makes your business different can tell a much better story.

Professional video can also work harder than a single post. The right footage can be used on your website, across social media, in digital advertising and in other marketing for months or even years.

Don’t Forget About the Knowledge You Already Have

One of the most valuable marketing resources in your business may be something you don’t think of as marketing at all:

Your experience

Think about all the questions customers ask.

How do I know when I need to replace this?

What’s the difference between these two option?

What should I look for before I buy?

How can I prevent this problem?

What should I do before winter?

Those questions can become valuable content.

A monthly blog gives your business an opportunity to answer questions in greater detail, demonstrate your experience and provide useful information that can then be shared through your website and social media.

You already know the answers.

The opportunity is turning that knowledge into content your customers can find and use.

Pick One Thing and Make it Better

Looking at your website, social media, video, and content all at once can make marketing feel overwhelming.

So don’t.

Pick one place to start.

Maybe your website needs attention first.

Maybe you have a great website but haven’t posted on Facebook in two months.

Maybe you’re consistently posting but everything looks the same and it’s time to introduce more video.

Maybe your team has decades of knowledge, but none of it is being turned into content customers can find online.

Identify the biggest opportunity and start there.

Once that piece is moving in the right direction, work on the next one.

Marketing doesn’t have to change overnight to get better.

Give Yourself a Head Start on 2027

January should be a time to build on what you’ve learned, not necessarily the first time you start thinking about marketing.

If you begin making improvments in September, you’ll have several months to see what your customers respond to.

Which social posts generate conversations?

What questions are people asking?

Which videos get attention?

What pages are people visiting on your website?

What topics should you talk about more?

By the time the calendar turns to 2027, you’ll have more than a list of resolutions.

You’ll have information.

You’ll have experience.

And hopefully, you’ll have momentum.

At Momentum Consulting, we help businesses figure out what makes sense for them. From website design and video production to social media content, graphic design and monthly blogs, our goal isn’t to convince every business that they need to do everything.

It’s to identify where better marketing can make a difference and help you put the right pieces together.

So if there’s something about your marketing you’ve been telling yourself you’ll get around to “next year,” maybe it’s worth asking one more question:

Why wait?
